The Wood Brothers
August 22, 2020 - 7:00 pm - 8:30 pmTicket Prices: $38.00 – $48.00
On August 22nd, 2020, the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum welcomes The Wood Brothers to Owensboro, Kentucky for a performance in Woodward Theatre. Combining threads of blues, folk, and soul, the trio have woven a recognizable sound that is uniquely their own.
Dubbed "masters of soulful folk" by Paste, The Wood Brothers formed after brothers Chris and Oliver Wood pursued separate musical careers for 15 years. Chris already had legions of devoted fans for his incomparable work as one-third of Medeski Martin &Wood, while Oliver toured with Tinsley Ellis before releasing a half-dozen albums with his band King Johnson. With drummer Jano Rix added as a permanent third member, it's become quite clear that The Wood Brothers is indeed the main act.
Blue Note released their debut Ways Not To Lose in 2006 and Loaded 2008. The band moved to Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Artists for Smoke Ring Halo with The Muse to follow in 2013. After relocating to Nashville, The Wood Brothers released Paradise in 2015 recorded at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye studio. In 2016, the band returned to Levon Helm's famed Woodstock Barn and recorded Live At The Barn which captured their sold-out performance that night and showcased the kind of singularly eclectic and electrifying performance style that's earned them devoted legions of fans around the world.
After a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Americana Album” for One Drop of Truth in 2018, The Wood Brothers unexpectedly recorded their latest effort and seventh album Kingdom In My Mind in 2019. “If we had known, we probably would have been too self-conscious to play what we played,” reflects bassist/vocalist Chris Wood. “At the time, we just thought we were jamming to break in our new studio, so we felt free to explore all these different ways of performing together without worrying about form or structure. It was liberating.”
Recorded live to tape, those freewheeling, improvised sessions became a vast pool of source material from which The Wood Brothers would go on to draw Kingdom In My Mind, their most spontaneous and experimental collection yet. Deep as the lyrics dig, the arrangements always manage to remain buoyant and light, though, drawing from across a broad sonic spectrum to create a transportive, effervescent blend that reflects the trio’s unique place in the modern musical landscape.
Doors open at 5 pm, and the concert begins at 7 pm. VIP seating is $48, and reserved seating is $38. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at bluegrasshall.org or in the Hall of Fame box office.
