SUMMARY:Home Alone
DESCRIPTION:Home Alone is the highly successful and beloved family comedy about a young boy named Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) who is accidentally left behind when his family takes off for a vacation in France over the holiday season. Once he realizes they’ve left him home alone\, he learns to fend for himself and\, eventually has to protect his house against two bumbling burglars (Joe Pesci\, Daniel Stern) who are planning to rob every house in Kevin’s suburban Chicago neighborhood. Though the film’s slapstick ending may be somewhat violent\, Culkin’s charming presence helped the film become one of the most successful ever at the time of its release.~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine\, All Movie Guide \nRating: PGGenre: Comedy\, Kids & FamilyDirected By: Chris ColumbusWritten By: John HughesIn Theaters: Nov 16\, 1990

SUMMARY:Planes\, Trains\, and Automobiles
DESCRIPTION:Were it not for its profanity-laden opening scenes\, John Hughes’ Planes\, Trains and Automobiles might have been suitable family entertainment: certainly it’s heaps less violent and mean-spirited than Hughes’ Home Alone. En route to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his family\, easily annoyed businessman Neal Page (Steve Martin) finds his first-class plane ticket has been demoted to coach\, and he must share his flight with obnoxious salesman Del Griffith (John Candy). A sudden snowstorm in Chicago forces the plane to land in Wichita. Unable to find a room in any of the four-star hotels\, Neal is compelled to accept Del’s invitation to share his accommodations in a cheapo-sleazo motel. Driven to distraction by Del’s annoying personal habits\, the ungrateful Neal lets forth with a stream of verbal abuse. That’s when Del delivers the anticipated (but always welcome) “I don’t judge\, why should you?”-type speech so common to John Hughes flicks. The shamefaced Neal tries to make up to Del\, but there’s a bumpy time ahead as the mismatched pair make their way back to Chicago\, first in a balky train\, then by way of a refrigerator truck. We know from the outset that the oil-and-water Neal and Del will be bosom companions by the end of Planes\, Trains and Automobiles\, but it’s still a fun ride. The best bit: a half-asleep Del thinking that he’s got his hand tucked between two pillows — until his bedmate\, Neal\, bellows “Those aren’t pillows!” ~ Hal Erickson\, Rovi \nRating: R (adult situations/language)Genre: ComedyDirected By: John HughesWritten By: John HughesIn Theaters: Nov 25\, 1987

SUMMARY:It's a Wonderful Life
DESCRIPTION:This is director Frank Capra’s classic bittersweet comedy/drama about George Bailey (James Stewart)\, the eternally-in-debt guiding force of a bank in the typical American small town of Bedford Falls. As the film opens\, it’s Christmas Eve\, 1946\, and George\, who has long considered himself a failure\, faces financial ruin and arrest and is seriously contemplating suicide. High above Bedford Falls\, two celestial voices discuss Bailey’s dilemma and decide to send down eternally bumbling angel Clarence Oddbody (Henry Travers)\, who after 200 years has yet to earn his wings\, to help George out. But first\, Clarence is given a crash course on George’s life\, and the multitude of selfless acts he has performed: rescuing his younger brother from drowning\, losing the hearing in his left ear in the process; enduring a beating rather than allow a grieving druggist (H.B. Warner) to deliver poison by mistake to an ailing child; foregoing college and a long-planned trip to Europe to keep the Bailey Building and Loan from letting its Depression-era customers down; and\, most important\, preventing town despot Potter (Lionel Barrymore) from taking over Bedford Mills and reducing its inhabitants to penury. Along the way\, George has married his childhood sweetheart Mary (Donna Reed)\, who has stuck by him through thick and thin. But even the love of Mary and his children are insufficient when George\, faced with an $8000 shortage in his books\, becomes a likely candidate for prison thanks to the vengeful Potter. Bitterly\, George declares that he wishes that he had never been born\, and Clarence\, hoping to teach George a lesson\, shows him how different life would have been had he in fact never been born. After a nightmarish odyssey through a George Bailey-less Bedford Falls (now a glorified slum called Potterville)\, wherein none of his friends or family recognize him\, George is made to realize how many lives he has touched\, and helped\, through his existence; and\, just as Clarence had planned\, George awakens to the fact that\, despite all its deprivations\, he has truly had a wonderful life. Capra’s first production through his newly-formed Liberty Films\, It’s a Wonderful Life lost money in its original run\, when it was percieved as a fairly downbeat view of small-town life. Only after it lapsed into the public domain in 1973 and became a Christmastime TV perennial did it don the mantle of a holiday classic. ~ Hal Erickson\, Rovi \nRating: PG (for thematic elements\, smoking and some violence)Genre: Classics\, Comedy\, Drama\, Kids & Family\, Science Fiction & FantasyDirected By: Frank CapraWritten By: Frank Capra\, Frances Goodrich\, Albert HackettIn Theaters: Dec 25\, 1946

SUMMARY:Scrooged
DESCRIPTION:A darkly comic and surreal contemporization of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol\, this effects-heavy Bill Murray holiday vehicle from 1988 sees the former SNL funnyman assuming the role of television executive Frank Cross\, the meanest and most depraved man on earth. Cross will stoop to unheard of levels to increase his network’s ratings — even if it means mounting outrageous programs to retain an audience\, such as “Robert Goulet’s Cajun Christmas” and Lee Majors in “The Night the Reindeer Died\,” with an AK-47-toting Santa. Cross plots his foulest move\, however\, for the Christmas holiday\, when he will force his office staff to mount a live production of A Christmas Carol on national television — and thus work through Christmas Eve. Cross’s life is turned upside down with visits from three ghosts: a craggy-faced cabbie known as The Ghost of Christmas Past (David Johansen); the sugar-plum fairy Ghost of Christmas Present (Carol Kane) (who gets her jollies by bonking Frank across the face with a toaster oven); and\, eventually\, the caped\, headless Ghost of Christmas Future\, who will send Frank sliding into a crematory oven — just before he gives the sleazoid one last chance to redeem himself. Along the way\, the spirits carry Frank to scenes from his past\, present\, and future (per Scrooge) and impart a glimpse of how he became so thoroughly rotten. The radiant Karen Allen co-stars as Frank’s girlfriend\, Claire Phillips\, and the film packs in cameos from countless celebrities — among them\, Mary Lou Retton\, John Houseman\, Jamie Farr\, and\, in a truly grisly and tasteless bit\, John Forsythe. Richard Donner directs\, from a script credited to the late Michael O’Donoghue and Mitch Glazer. ~ Nathan Southern\, Rovi \nRating: PG-13 (adult situations/language\, violence)Genre: Comedy\, Science Fiction & FantasyDirected By: Richard DonnerWritten By: Mitch Glazer\, Michael O’DonoghueIn Theaters: Nov 23\, 1988

SUMMARY:The Santa Clause
DESCRIPTION:Television sitcom star Tim Allen made his big screen debut with this light\, family-friendly holiday comedy. Allen stars as Scott Calvin\, the divorced dad of Charlie (Eric Lloyd). Scott is distressed to learn that his ex-wife Laura (Wendy Crewson) and Charlie’s psychiatrist stepfather Neal (Judge Reinhold) have informed his son that there is no Santa Claus. While a sullen Charlie visits his dad on Christmas Eve\, a noise on the roof brings them outside\, where Scott startles the intruder\, who tumbles from the roof. It turns out that there is a Santa after all\, and Scott has just accidentally killed him. Because of a legal technicality known as “the Santa clause\,” Scott inherits the jolly old elf’s job. As the next year passes\, Scott rapidly gains weight\, grows a white beard and meets the elf Bernard (David Krumholtz) — who is the one who really runs the North Pole — while Charlie regains his Christmas spirit. However\, Neal becomes concerned about Scott’s sudden change in appearance and insistence that he’s Santa\, and he forces him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Director John Pasquin previously directed Allen in the TV series Home Improvement and would team with him again for Jungle 2 Jungle (1997).More \nRating: PGGenre: Action & Adventure\, Comedy\, Kids & Family\, Science Fiction & FantasyDirected By: John PasquinWritten By: Leo Benvenuti\, Steve RudnickIn Theaters: Nov 11\, 1994

SUMMARY:Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver: A Bluegrass Christmas 12-15
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Christmas celebration\, bluegrass style. Hall of Fame member Doyle Lawson brings is immense talents to the stage in Woodward Theatre on Saturday\, December 15th.  Doors open at 6 pm\, show begins at 8 pm.  Sales tax is included in ticketing fees. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs far back as he can remember\, Doyle Lawson has loved the sound of music. When Doyle was young\, everyone listened to The Grand Ole Opry\, and his family was no exception. Though he listened to all the stars on the Opry\, the group that impressed him most was Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys. His music was different\, more intense\, that high lonesome sound. He could hardly wait for Saturday nights to arrive so he could listen. Doyle decided early on that he wanted to play that kind of music. \n\n\n\nIn 1963\, Doyle left East Tennessee for Nashville and got a job playing banjo with Jimmy Martin. In 1966\, he started working with JD Crowe in Lexington\, KY\, first playing guitar and then mandolin. In 1969\, Doyle was back with Jimmy Martin for about six months but returned to Crowe’s band in 1971. Doyle started with the Country Gentlemen in September 1971 and played with them 8 years.  By this time\, he had played in bands “that had their sound before he joined them”\, for more than 10 years.  Doyle wanted to put together a group that would have “his sound”. \n\n\n\nTo that end\, Doyle formed a group\, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver\, in April 1979. He was looking for “his sound” and tried many different types of songs. He wanted a strong quartet like the ones his dad used to sing with. Terry Baucom\, Jimmy Haley\, Lou Reid and Doyle laid the foundation for what has become the Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver sound. In 39 years\, the makeup of the band has changed many times and Doyle jokingly tells folks that Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver is the “farm team” for bluegrass.  Doyle integrates each member’s special talents into his group\, while not sacrificing the Quicksilver sound.  It is important to him that “people hear what they expect to hear” when Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver takes to the stage! \n\n\n\nDoyle plays mandolin and sings tenor\, baritone and lead for the group.  Josh Swift plays the resonator guitar and sings bass on the quartets.  Joe Dean plays banjo and guitar and occasionally sings lead.  Dustin Pyrtle is the group’s tenor/lead singer and plays the guitar.  Eli Johnston\, who plays bass\, shares lead and tenor vocals with Dustin.  The fiddler is Stephen Burwell.

Del carries on\, and carries with him the hallowed traditions of bluegrass and its dedicated following.  The Del McCoury Band won Grammys for Best Bluegrass Album in 2005 and 2013. \nPreferred seating tickets are $45\, and general tickets are $35.  Doors open at 6 pm\, show starts at 8 pm.  Exhibits will be open for touring up until show time.

SUMMARY:Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives 11-30
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, November 30th for Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives!  Doors open at 6 pm\, show starts at 8 pm.  Exhibits will be open for touring up until show time.   \nWith legends like George Jones\, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard all passed on\, country music purists often echo the question Jones himself asked: “Who’s going to fill their shoes?” The answer\, in part\, is Marty Stuart. \nWhile he’s too gracious to admit it himself\, the Grammy-winning singer\, songwriter and musician is living\, breathing country-music history. He’s played alongside the masters\, from Cash to Lester Flatt\, who discovered him; been a worldwide ambassador for Nashville\, Bakersfield and points in between; and safeguarded country’s most valuable traditions and physical artifacts. \nBut most importantly\, Stuart continues to record and release keenly relevant music\, records that honor country’s rich legacy while advancing it into the future. Way Out West\, his 18th studio album\, hits both of those marks. Produced by Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers)\, the album is a cinematic tour-de-force\, an exhilarating musical journey through the California desert that solidifies Stuart as a truly visionary artist.

SUMMARY:Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder 11-17
DESCRIPTION:You are purchasing tickets for Saturday\, November 17th\, 2018.  Doors will open at 7:00 pm\, show begins at 8:00 pm.  \nFifteentime GRAMMY® Awardwinner Ricky Skaggs’ career is easily among the most significant in recent country music history. If Skaggs’ burgeoning trophy case full of awards wasn’t already enough evidence of that fact\, consider that legendary guitarist Chet Atkins once credited Skaggs with “singlehandedly saving country music.” His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres\, from where it all began in bluegrass music\, to striking out on new musical journeys\, while still leaving his musical roots intact.

SUMMARY:Sam Bush
DESCRIPTION:If joy were a person\, he’d bring both peace and frenzy. He’d be full of music\, light\, and energy that soothes even as it stirs us up. Eyes closed\, wire-rim glasses in place\, mandolin pressed against his ribs\, joy would be Sam Bush on a stage. \n“I feel fortunate that when it’s time to play\, no matter how I feel physically or mentally\, once the downbeat starts\, my mind goes to a place that’s all music\,” says Bush. “The joy of the music comes to me and overtakes me sometimes––I just become part of the music.” \nThe Father of Newgrass and King of Telluride has long since established himself as roots royalty\, revered for both his solo and sideman work\, which includes time with Harris\, Lyle Lovett\, and Béla Fleck. But instead of kicking back and soaking up honors such as an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award and suite of Grammys and International Bluegrass Music Association trophies\, Bush still strives relentlessly to create something new. \nRaised on a farm just outside of Bowling Green\, Kentucky\, Bush grew up plowing tobacco fields in the Southern summer heat alongside his family. He started playing mandolin when he was 11 years old. “I believe growing up on a farm probably helped me channel my energy into learning music and being so interested in it\,” Bush says. “Me and my sisters\, we all loved it. I’ve often wondered if that’s because growing up on a farm\, you couldn’t go ride your bike all over town and horse around like the other kids.” \nFor Bush\, a lifetime of channeling his energy has led to stylistic innovations that have changed the course of bluegrass and roots music alike.
